The Project

The Northern Kentucky University College of Education and Human Services (CEHS) ePortfolio Project, now in its third year has established itself as a researched-based technology tool for the development, assessment and archiving of student generated electronic portfolios.

A pilot program to assess online portfolio and assessment programs began in the Spring of 2005. Faculty and staff gathered to view and select an online portfolio system that would meet the demands of the growing student population within the CEHS. Chalk and Wire's ePortfolio online system was selected from amongst several third-party commercial solutions for evaluation. Students enrolled in the Admissions semester and focusing their studies on Middle Level Education were recruited to the pilot study.

In 2006, work commenced to design the content for an ePortfolio support website. The site became available during the second half of the pilot (Spring of 2006) and contained many resources about the ePortfolio pilot. A second stage of the pilot program ran concurrently in January that looked at another program for evaluating electronic portfolios. This second stage evaluated admissions semester students and faculty using a program designed by faculty member Dr. Steven Smith.

In the Fall of 2007 all college of education teacher education programs began using ePortfolio as the previous paper-based version was phased out. At the same time, version 2.0 of the ePortfolio Assessment Program was introduced providing secure web-based access for faculty advisors and students.

The Development

The ePortfolio Assessment system is built upon a FileMakerPro® database and utilizes a web-based interface. I designed this tool to meet the specific needs of the Northern Kentucky University College of Education and Human Services faculty.
